Oh! And my new fav... Iced green tea.

Since reading The Kind Diet I've been dabbling a little bit in veganism. I'm not too sure about it yet... I've always thought you need to be super smart and a health nut to make sure you get enough protein and calcium.
Now I'm not so sure that's true... Anyways, I did one of Alicia's recipes the other night, Crispy Peanut Butter Treats. It just called for brown rice puffs, brown rice syrup (which I found is SUPER yummy), nut butter, and chocolate chips. It was really good but... they brown rice puffs are so chewy. They aren't crispy at all like rice crispy treats. I'm trying to figure out a way around that.

Lunch today was at a hibachi bistro with the hubs and squirrel. I got chicken, veggies, and rice. I ate all the veggies and rice. Then I picked at the chicken. Next time I'll just get the veggies and rice.

My afternoon snack was this bugger...

This is embarassing... But I'm pregnant... I ate 3 of these yesterday. I LOVE them. And it's weird actually... I don't like chocolate and mint. Thin mints are blah... Mint chocolate chip icecream is gross. Not now! Hey at least it's sorta healthy right! It's not nachos and potato chips!
So check them out... Chocolate rice crispy things on one side and then white chocolate with peppermint candy pieces on the other. Looking at these pics makes me want another!

Another thing we've tried from Alicia's book is Rice Dream mint pies.

These are vegan icecream treats and holy moly! They are gooood! A bit on the expensive side but I guess you wouldn't eat them everyday.
I cut them up and share them with the squirrel.

She's a fan...

I've always thought vegans were a bit weird... Mainly because I didn't understand why they wouldn't want to drink milk or eat cheese. I can deal with not eating meat but cheese?
I've also always though vegan kids were even weirder... (Sorry if I'm offending anyone but I promise I do have a point to all this). I didn't think it was really fair to make that extreme choice for your child.
I'm still not sure how I feel but I like the dabbling. It exposes myself and my family to different foods and new ways of cooking. Stay tuned for some more veganisms.
Well I'm off to make some tea...

Another new thing from The Kind Diet... It's good but honestly it doesn't have much flavor.

You should try that crispy peanut butter treat recipe with Kashi Go Lean crunch! I bet that would be delicious!
I too have been playing around with veganism. I gave up dairy milk and cheese awhile back but it's the yogurt that I can't get rid of. Plus it's hard baking without real butter and heavy cream, you know?
id say shes a BIG fan of them :)
i honestly thought they were wierd too...
I could easily eat 3 choco pep sticks, too. I love that flavour!
i love rice crispy squares.. they were always my fav snack/treat growing up and im pretty sure they still are!
those ice cream sandwiches are to die for.. i had some similar to those last summer.. i would buy boxes every week.. addicting!
and im so craving a stirfry of veg and protein right now.. lunch is minutes away!!!! woot. xoxo
I really enjoyed The Kind Diet, even though I'm not vegan. I'm definitely a "vegan dabbler" haha and enjoy cooking vegan meals and learning more about having a healthy mind, body and life.
You know, I'm not a huge peppermint fan either, and yet I also love those Luna bars. And I am definitely not pregnant! HA!
i think the chocolate peppermint is my favorite flavor after iced oatmeal raisin. mmm!
I'm not even pregnant and I've definitely had days when I needed 2 or 3 luna bars. Like you said, it's better than overeating on junk! ;)
havent tried that luna bar, looks like a great treat!
Okay, you've sold me, I really need to read this book - I'll check and see if my local library has it. I'm not vegan by any means, but I love reading books like this one!
I haven't read this book but I really think I should. I love Alica Silverstone and while I don't think I will be a convert to a Vegan way of living I still would love to read this book! :)
That Luna Bar looks so GOOD!
I will be checking to see if I can get them in Canada.
I'm loving your take on this. It's making me want to dabble too. I'm having a hard enough time with my May Challenge - no beef :)
Your blog looks yummy and so healthy today, especially so. I am a big Luna bar fan, too, though I go for the lemon mostly.
I really want to read this book!
One my goals this year is to go vegan for a day a few times this year. I think it is interesting to dabble.
I'm not strictly vegan, but I try to stay away from a lot of animal products when I cook for myself. I agree that it's an extreme choice to make for a child, but I think that vegetarianism is okay as far as kids are concerned. Mama Pea on Peas and Thank You is a great inspiration in that department!!
I need to read that book!
Cool vegan dabbling. I couldn't do it. I need milk, cheese, cottage cheese now, doesn't most chocolate have dairy? Ice cream, yogurt...it just wouldn't work. I'm a dairy girl. I could live without meat, even though I love it.
The peppermint bars look amazing. I've seen them on other blogs, I don't think we ever have them.
Have a great weekend.
I have to agree with you, I've never understood how anyone could be a vegan. Of course, when you are brought up that way it's a different story, you don't know any different! Having grownup drinking milk and eating cheese, and meat, I just don't get it. Even for the health benefits, I don't think it's worth it (for me, at least).
Regarding your comment about not getting enough protein and calcium, it's actually pretty easy to get enough as a vegan/vegetarian. It takes a little work and practice, but it's very doable if you put your mind to it!
That's my favorite Luna Bar ever. I could eat three too. They are highly addictive!
I could never give up my beloved cheese - I have it with almost every meal! :D
Your daughter is gorgeous!
I ate 3 caramel brownie luna bars the other day. I guess the baby likes them!
I'm not a fan of peppermint, but since this one has such enthusiastic reviews, I may have to give it a try.
By the way...I had my gender/anatomy ultrasound so I'll be updating my blog soon :)
You eat whatever you and baby crave my dear. It's already stressful being pregnant but to worry about what you eat as well is too stressful for me. Guess I just don't have a high tolerance for stress haha. But when I was preggos, I ate whatever baby and I craved as long as it wasn't overdoing it and harming baby. I knew I could worry about losing the weight later but what my child needed was food, not me worrying about my weight and not getting enough to eat.
Hope you have a wonderful Mother's day filled with joy, love, and laughter! :-D
I'm not offended- I thought the same thing!
I used to loveeee cheese (and Greek yogurt!) but after a while, the desire just fades away. Plus, it's a whole different perspective :) If you want to try non-dairy ice cream, you've GOT to try the So Delicious pints! They're the best :D
I think it's great if you have the dedication to go vegan and make sure that you get all the necessary nutrients. It's a little too extreme for me, but I think trying out new things is fun!
I think it's great to try new recipes - my husband and I like to try new ways of eating for about a week - enough time to really stretch our thinking but not get bored or sick of eating the same things! :)
I think it's wonderful to try new recipes that are outside your comfort zone. As to the peppermint sticks - the baby must like them :-). I love your blog and will be back as often as I can to see if you have been able to give up cheese. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Blessings...Mary
Sometimes it's fun to dabble with things
i agree, while i could easily switch over completely to almond milk, it's the yogurt and cheese that get me :) but i definitely make vegan and vegetarian recipes, just don't usually classify!
You could try toasting the cereal before making the bars. That might crisp it up a bit. I love that you are trying new things. It is always nice to have extra stuff in your repertoire. And those Luna bars are da' bomb. Sorry to get all ghetto. I couldn't give up cheese. Believe me, I've tried. It wasn't pretty.
