While I was in the waiting room I got to thinkin'. 15 lbs is on the higher end of the weight gain spectrum for 23 weeks. However, I've got everything working against me. 1) I'm not allowed to exercise. I can walk but it's near 90 degrees here already and walking outside just isn't appealing. 2) The husband leaves in July so we are trying to have a good time together. Lots of eating out and relaxing. 3) I'm an emotional eater. Him getting ready to deploy has put a serious strain on my eating habits.
Another however...
Does all of that give me an excuse to eat an entire pint of Ben and Jerry's while on vacation?
NO.
Does this give me an excuse to stop going to the gym to walk?
NO.
Does this give me an excuse to shove the veggies aside and reach for the french fries?
NO.
Y'all I need to get back on track. My weigh in at the doctor was a wake up call. 15lbs is ok. My doctor expected a 25-30lb total weight gain. But the last part of your pregnancy is where you gain the most weight. I'm not about to start trying to lose weight. But I'm sure that our Hatteras trip has pushed me more towards 20lbs.
When I uploaded all the pics I took I was a little embarassed about what I ate.
I'll show you...

Hatteras has an abundance of amazing local restaurants. We went to one breakfast place there quite a few times. It's called the Orange Blossom Bakery & Cafe.
For the majority of the time I just opted for a slice of homemade lemon poppyseed bread and coffee.
But this bakery is known for their "apple uglies" so I had to try one. They were unreal.

We also ate at my favorite place for breakfast, Island Perks. There I had an egg scrambler with potato, egg, and cheese. Plus a homemade biscuit.
We actually ate quite a few sandwiches for lunch. We tried a sandwich shop in Frisco called Frisco Sandwich Co. It was just ok.
My favorite sandwich shop was actually in Manteo called Poor Richards Sandwich Shop. It was cheap, fresh, and delicious! I inhaled my ham and cheese before I could even take a picture!
We found a great pizza place for dinner called Toppers in Avon.
And by far our favorite restaurant was Rusty's Surf and Turf. They had the best crabcakes I've ever had! Everything was delicious!
See a trend in my eating? Fat, fat, and fat... This doesn't even include my fill of fried shrimp, coleslaw and hushpuppies. It was out of control. Normally, when I order at a restaurant I try to find something semi-healthy. I didn't even think about it while we were there.
I know some of you might have the excuse "well you were on vacation". I like that excuse too. BUT every single meal doesn't get that excuse. I did eat some of my Umpqua Oats and we did buy fresh fruit to snack on.
The husband didn't do much better. Check out what he ate for breakfast every day... I'm not even kidding...

We didn't just eat on our trip... Even though it kind of felt like it. We saw all of the lighthouses. Hatteras and Currituck.

We did some serious pool time...

We got a bunch of cute family pictures...

And we visited the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island.

Let's just say though, I'm happy to be home drinking tea (in my new mug) and eating my veggies.
How do you guys stay on track during a vacation? Or maybe you just throw in the towel like I did...

Now that I'm pregnant, I can totally relate to how hard it is to be as healthy as I was before. Cravings, real hunger, funky food aversions, blood sugar issues all make it really hard to stay on track.
Have you tried any of the Walk Away the Pounds DVD's? They are great for indoor walking workouts - very low impact. They keep my heart rate down right around 120-140 so not too high, but good enough and you can slow it down and modify the moves as much as you want. Or maybe even try out some prenatal yoga if you want to take it even easier. Just adding in a little movement through those workouts might make you feel a little better.
Hang in there girl, I might just be at 15 pounds or higher when I'm at your point in pregnancy too at the rate I'm going!!
I understand where you are right now. I am 17 weeks and up 20 lbs. I was doing the emotional eating thing too plus, hey PREGNANCY!
My blood pressure was elevated at my last dr. appt which was pretty much my wake up call. Add to that constant headaches and I knew I had to do something. I feel so much better now that I'm eating clean again. It's not easy the first few days but it gets better, then you feel better and it's all good :)
BTW- The vacation looks amazing!
If it makes you feel any better Kristen, I gained about 50 lbs during both my pegnancies. My avg weight is usually between 100 to 110 lbs so I gained about half my weight during pregnancy! My doctor never told me to watch my weight gain though so I just ate what I wanted as long as it was safe for my babies. I guess what in trying to say is, just enjoy your pregnancy and don't worry too much.
I love your blog and its design. When I'm on vacation, I HATE watching what I eat. You are traveling some place new with new, exciting food. It is so hard!
What a great trip! I know you want me to say, yes, get back on track with eating your veggies! But, what I am really going to say is...yes, start eating your veggies, but relish this time with your family. You'll never get it back! I think it is totally ok to eat like you did on vacation...now, just start the "upward trend". I mean you only have a few weeks till the hubby leaves right? You have every reason to eat the way you did, I would do the exact same:)
I gained 28lbs total with our son, but I'm also pretty tall, so it had a lot of places to go...I'm sure my next one I'll gain even more!
Sometimes you just need to let loose and relax! That's what vacations are for. I can imagine you are feeling uncomfortable and heavier than you should. Now is the perfect time to get back on track. I find the more veggies and fruit I eat, the more I crave them (rather do not crave fatty foods) and then the better I feel.
Also remember, you are pregnant! Take this as your time to eat whatever and enjoy it :) You will be fine, and you are healthy. I think of getting off track as tricking my body a little, so when I feed it "good" food it really likes me!
I think you are right on track. If you gain a pound a week until 40 weeks you will still be in the recommended 25-35 pound range. That being said, I do understand. I have a hard time not feeling in control of what my body is doing!
I'm glad you enjoyed your vacation and time with your family. You wouldn't have wanted to have spent it worrying about everything you ate.
I usually start off my vacation by doing my best to make healthy choices and controlling my portions, but halfway through I give in and indulge and by the end I am eating enough for three! Ha, oh well, that's what vacations are for, no?
I usually just throw in the towel. Unless, it is a very long vacation. Under 2 weeks is free game----yum!!
I will admit to snarfing 3, count them 3 (in a row) pain au chocolates in Paris when i was pregnant--and the baby sure turned out sweet! :)
Wow, after seeing those picutres I can understand why it was hard to resist! They all look so yummy!
I'm sure you'll get back on track soon. Routines really help and vacation just kind of throws a kink in them!
