RECIPE: Brown Paper Bag Popcorn

We love popcorn in our house. We all do- me, the husband, the kids, and the dogs. We don't make microwave popcorn anymore since we discovered stove popped but that method is so messy and uses a lot of oil.

I tried a method today that might have changed our little popcorn lovin' lives.

Start with 1/4c popcorn kernels.

I used Ryder's Red from Boulder Popcorn.  You can use any kind of kernels.

Put them in a lunch sized brown paper bag.

Microwave for about 2 minutes.

You need to watch it so it doesn't burn.  Mine took about 2 minutes 20 seconds.

Perfect popcorn!

I tried it the first time with 1/4c popcorn, 1/4t canola oil, and 1/4t salt.  It was good but the oil made my microwave greasy.  Which is why the bag got greasy.  The oil isn't necessary.  I honestly didn't taste a difference.

I sprinkled mine with nutritional yeast and salt.

What's your favorite popcorn topping?

A little melted butter works just fine for me. This looks great.

@ButtercupThat sounds really good. Since there isn't any oil in it I could totally get away with butter on top!

We got rid of our microwave, so I went without popcorn for quite some time before I tried the stovetop method. I love it! I don't consider it messy at all, just an extra pot to clean. I use peanut oil which gives the popcorn a subtle flavor, and then a little butter and salt round it out. I tried using an artificially butter flavored popcorn oil "for popping and topping!", but honestly, real butter tastes better.

I read about this tip ages ago and bought some kernels and brown paper bags, then promptly forgot about it. Thanks for hte reminder, I'll have to try this soon!

What a great idea! I usually make stove top popcorn and occasionally will buy microwave... When I use the stove top method, I usually just add a touch of oil and it works out beautifully!

LOVE the idea of using a bag - easy and saves time AND money! I've never heard of nutritional yeast....I'll have to google it. I usually just put a touch of salt on mine.

Thanks for a great post!

@AnnNutritionalyeast gives it a cheesy taste minus the cheese. My husband actually asked if I added parmesan to it because that's what it tastes like. Its delicious and is nutritious.
